Auto sector sales in May, Tata motor posts 10% growth

Tata Motors May sales up to 62,296 units

Auto major Tata Motors today reported a 10% increase in total sales in May to 62,296 units from 56,775 units in the same month last year.

In May, the homegrown firm registered a 9% decline in passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market to 19,401 units from 21,324 units in the same period last year, the company said in a statement.

During the month, its small car Nano's sales soared by 84% to 6,515 units, it said.

The 'Indica' range reported sales of 5,497 units, down 35%. The 'Indigo' family, with sales of 4,268 units, witnessed a dip of 35% vis-a-vis the same month last year.

The 'Sumo', 'Safari' and 'Aria' models accounted for sales of 3,121 units, up 15% compared to May last year.

In the commercial vehicles segment, Tata Motors recorded a 19% jump in domestic sales in May to 37,361 units.

Light commercial vehicles sales during the month stood at 21,829 units, up 24%, while medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales stood at 15,532 units, a growth of 12% compared to May, 2010.

Tata Motors' total exports in May rose by 39% to 5,534 units from 3,976 units in the same month last year.

General Motors India May sales marginally up 1.3%

General Motors India today reported 1.3% increase in sales in May, 2011 at 8,329 as compared to the same month last year.

The company had recorded sales of 8,225 units in May last year, General Motors India vice-president P Balendran said.

Commenting on the performance Balendran said: "Given the hike in interest rates, fuel prices, commodity prices, inflation, etc, we expect the market to remain depressed in the coming months as well".

During May, 2011, the company sold 3,023 units of small car Spark, 2,144 units of hatchback Beat, 135 units of premium hatchback UVA, 218 units of entry level sedan Aveo, 240 units of mid-sized sedan Optra and 659 units of luxury sedan Cruze.

The company also sold 1,767 units of multi-purpose vehicle Tavera and 143 units of sports utility vehicle Captiva, Balendran said.

India Yamaha Motor sales up 55% in May

Two-wheeler maker India Yamaha Motor today reported a 55% increase in total sales to 38,812 units in May, compared to the corresponding month a year ago.

The company sold 25,033 units in the same month last year, India Yamaha Motor said in a statement.

In the domestic market, the company's May sales stood at 27,959 units, as against 17,614 units in the same month last year, up 58.7%.

Commenting on the sales performance, India Yamaha Motor CEO and Managing Director Hiroyuki Suzuki said: "We are seeing good sales growth this year and expect the momentum to continue for the rest of the year."

Exports of India Yamaha rose by 46.28% to 10,853 units in May, 2011, from 7,419 units in the year-ago period, the company said.
