3 Bangaloreans crushed in Train near Vellore

An 82-year-old woman who was hard of hearing, her 45-year-old son and a relative were run over by an express train at Vaniyambadi, near Vellore, on Wednesday morning. The woman's son and relative were trying to rescue her when she didn't notice the approaching train. Her 80-year-old brother-in-law, Krishnappa, escaped with a fracture in the leg.

Railway police said the victims — Pappamma, her son V Srinivas and Krishnappa's son K Ramesh — along with eight other family members were returning to Bangalore when the incident occurred. They had attended the annual temple festival at their ancestral village of Aasanampattu, near Vellore, and come to Vaniyambadi to board the Kakinada Express. Instead of the foot overbridge, they took a short-cut across the tracks.

"Most of the family members had climbed on to the platform, while Pappamma, who was hard of hearing, was left alone on the railway tracks. The others saw Ernakulam-Guwahati Express approaching. Seeing his mother struggling on the tracks, Srinivas jumped down and tried to help her. His cousin Ramesh also jumped down. Krishnappa followed. Realizing the speed of the train, Krishnappa tried to jump back onto the platform. The train hit his leg and he suffered a minor fracture," a railway police officer said.
