Pakistan's spinners completed the job they had begun on the fourth afternoon, slicing through the West Indian middle order and tail to secure a series-levelling victory by 196 runs in St Kitts. Once the morning dawned sunny and clear, it was only a matter of time before West Indies capitulated. They batted for 27.3 overs this morning and added 100 runs. It was over before lunch at Warner Park.
With the luxury of lots of runs to defend, Misbah-ul-Haq placed several fielders around the bat. The edge came in the day's third over, with Brendan Nash poking at an offbreak from Saeed Ajmal and watching first slip take a regulation chance.
Carlton Baugh and Darren Sammy had a partnership that spanned ten overs, far too little time to call it a fight back. That ended when Baugh was trapped plumb in front by Abdur Rehman, who had to wait for the third umpire to overturn Asoka de Silva's not-out decision to celebrate his fourth wicket. Sammy battled for 41, off 51 balls, while Ravi Rampaul swung lustily to take 20 off 22. Saeed Ajmal got them both - Sammy to a daft shot, Rampaul to a sharp reflex catch at silly point.
With lunch approaching, Pakistan had only one wicket left to take. Devendra Bishoo then played the ball to backward point and kept his eyes on it. Kemar Roach hared down the pitch, and then turned and ambled back. The direct hit found him yards short and began to walk off without waiting for the third umpire's decision. It had only been a matter of time, and the end came sooner rather than later.
Presentations:
Man of the series award goes, deservingly, to the smiling doosra merchant - Saeed Ajmal. "Very happy with the bowling ... Rehman has been good at one end, Hafeez has been good against left handers, and that helped me a lot."
Misbah: "I am really proud of these bunch of guys and their fighting spirit. Catching was one of our failings in the previous game, but we turned it around and it was one of the big differences between the teams in this game. Taufeeq took some good catches, the confdence rubbed off on his batting and he got a wonderful 100. I am happy I am performing well, it feels good to lead from the front. We hope to play on our home grounds soon, but on the positive side, we are getting exposure outside and becoming a better team in the process."
Taufeeq Umar is the Man of the Match: "I had my chances, dropped twice.. That happens in cricket and I made use of them. I was always positive that I will come back [and score a Test ton after an eight-year break]. Good pitch, the ball came on well and our bowlers did really well."
Sammy says his side lost momentum through the second Test. "We have not been able to be consistent with the bat or ball. We have some work to do. Can't fault the lower order, they are doing their best. India is going to be a tight series, but we are looking forward to it."
