Friendship clubs lure with sex talk

Mohit Agarwal (name changed), a class IX student of a reputed school in the city, drained all the money from his father's credit card by making phone calls to an unknown girl he got in touch with through a friendship club. Mohit, a resident of HEC Township, spent the money in just a span of a week while his parents were away to Vishakapatnam to attend a wedding. He used the money not only to call the friendship club number but also to watch pornographic sites on the Internet. The matter came to light when his father's bank called him to inform about the huge sum of money spent from his credit card.

Similarly, Rajiv Kumar, a private company employee, found his college going younger brother glued to the cellphone most of the time at night. He asked his brother whether he has a girlfriend to which he replied in the affirmative.

A few days later, Kumar found his brother did not have a girlfriend but was talking sex on the phone with a girl he met through a friendship club advertisement.

These are not just stray incidents. A large number of youngsters in the city are falling prey to sex rackets being run in the garb of friendship clubs. The advertisements catch the fancy of the young with the promise of 100 per cent enjoyment' by fashion models, college girls and even high profile housewives. Needless to say, when one calls a number published in such an ad, the receiver, mostly a young girl, directs the individual to get in touch with a local contact after receiving payment through credit cards or through electronic transfer of funds.

SSP Praveen Kumar Singh admitted such cases are rampant. "If we get complaints regarding such clubs and rackets from any part of Ranchi, we act against them," said Singh.

"We are keeping a close watch on such friendship clubs and establishments," he said.
