ISRO Unveils SAGA-220 (Supercomputer For Aerospace With GPU Architecture-220 Teraflops)

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has come up with a supercomputer SAGA-220 (Supercomputer for Aerospace with GPU Architecture-220 teraflops) with a peak performance of 220 TeraFLOPS (220 Trillion Floating Point Operations per second).

This supercomputer has been built at a cost of Rs 14 crore by the Satish Dhawan Supercomputing Facility at Thiruvananthapuram's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). It will help the space scientists in dealing with difficult aerospace problems.

The SAGA-220 runs on 400 NVIDIA Tesla 2070 GPUs and 400 Intel Quad Core Xeon CPUs which has been provided by Wipro. According to a statement issued by ISRO, the performance provided by each of the CPU is 50 GigaFLOPS and GPU is 500 GigaFLOPS amounting to the system's theoretical peak performance to 220 TeraFLOPS.

The GPU system provides better performance with respect to space requirements, cost and power as compared to the usual CPU system. It has a power consumption of 150 KW.
