Dunlop withdraws lay-off at Sahagunj unit

Dunlop India has withdrawn the lay-off notice for the 900-odd workers at Sahagunj unit, according to a Ruia group release.

"The lay-off notice issued by Dunlop India Ltd will be withdrawn immediately. The company has been advised to immediately issue a new notice to that effect," Group Chairman Pawan K Ruia was quoted in the company release issued on Tuesday.

The management decided to withdraw the notice at a meeting held under the group chairman during the day.

When the lay-off notice was issued at the factory gate last weekend, the senior and middle-level executives of the Ruia Group were busy formulating business strategy and analysing last year's performance at the annual business convention at Thailand.

Ruia on Monday said from Bangkok that the tyre-maker would withdraw the lay-off notice soon and prepare a revised business plan. The plan would be implemented in the next four months.

The size of the required fund and the revised product mix would be known as soon as the plans crystallised, according to the statement.

The company sought co-operation of workers unions of the Sahaganj in implementing the revised long-term revival plan, besides proactive assistance from the West Bengal government in stopping thefts at the plant and workers' housing.

Meanwhile, Dunlop said a 50 MW-captive power plant, a major element in making the unit viable, was yet to get necessary approvals.
