Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic clashes in semi final

Third seed Roger Federer will meet in-form Novak Djokovic for a place in the French Open final after beating home favourite Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) in a low-quality quarterfinal match on Tuesday.

The 16-time Grand Slam winner, who lost in the last eight last year following four straight final appearances, faces Djokovic after the second seed's scheduled quarterfinal opponent, Italy's Fabio Fognini, withdrew through injury.

"He (Monfils) is a superb player, so I knew the danger of this quarterfinal," said Federer after his sixth career victory over Monfils.

"I'm very happy to be in the semifinals."

Former world number one Federer, the 2009 champion, has made steady progress in the tournament to date and is yet to lose a set.

Djokovic, however, has beaten the great Swiss in their three previous encounters and requires just one more victory to level John McEnroe's 1984 record of 42 matches unbeaten at the start of a season.

A victory on Friday will also crown the Serb as the new world number one.

"Playing a semifinal here at Roland Garros is a great moment and playing such a great player is what we train for," added Federer.

Federer made an uncertain start amid windy, overcast conditions on Court Philippe Chatrier and was broken to love in his second service game.

The Swiss broke back immediately, however, thanks to a perfectly judged backhand drop shot that bit and died in the dust, before obliging the ninth-seeded Monfils to fight off three break points in the eighth game.

Seeded outside the top two at a Grand Slam for the first time since Wimbledon in 2003, Federer brought up two set points on Monfils' serve shortly afterwards and then clinched the first set when the world number nine put a forehand wide.

Following an exchange of breaks in the second set, Federer broke for a 4-2 lead when Monfils double-faulted, prompting the Frenchman to fling his racquet to the ground in disgust.

Both men were culpable of some dismal shot-making, but it did not prevent Federer from closing out the set when a stretching Monfils sent a backhand long.

Monfils saved three break points at 4-4 in the third set and two at 5-5, but swiftly fell 6-1 down in the ensuing tie-break and was finally beaten when Federer thrashed a forehand winner down the line.

Gayle yet to respond to West Indies Cricket Board

Explosive West Indies opener Chris Gayle, who hasn't been included for the only Twenty20 International and first two ODIs against India, is yet to respond to the call from West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) top brass to sort out the differences in order to be eligible for selection in the national team.

The Jamaican media is also unaware as to when Gayle would decide to sit across the table with the WICB officials and bury the hatchet.

The WICB officials are peeved about a radio interview in which Gayle alleged that the board authorities didn't bother to check the status of his fitness before annoucing the squad for Pakistan series.

That has irked the WICB officials to such an extent that they have kept the records of the e-mails sent to the big-bodied Jamaican enquiring about his fitness as well as the record of the numerous phone calls that went unanswered.

"They want to confront him with solid evidence and seek an unconditional public apology before he could again play for West Indies," said the source.

This move has apparently put Gayle on backfoot and forced him to keep his counsel. In most likelihood, he would arrive in Jamaica on Wednesday and then speak to Dinanath Ramnaraine, president of the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA), before deciding on his next course of action.

There is widespread anger in the Caribbean against the non-inclusion of Gayle who many regard as the best Twenty20 batsman in the world today and who emerged as the highest scorer in the recently concluded IPL with 608 runs at an average of over 183.

The WICB is well aware about the star power of the Jamaican and would definitely want that the differences are sorted out at the earliest. Even the broadcasters would want to see Gayle in action.

With none of the top Indian stars touring, Gayle's absence may just hit the TRPs.

The series starts at Port of Spain in Trinidad where the only T20 match will be played on June 4, followed by first and second ODIs on June 6 and 8 respectively.

Antigua hosts the third and fourth one-day international on June 11 and 13.

Jamaica hosts the last ODI against India on June 16, followed by the first Test starting from June 20.

Shilpa Shetty's Woodlawn Cottage estate at Surrey occupied by squatters

Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra own a sprawling six-bedroom Woodlawn Cottage on the exclusive estate of the St. George's Hill community in Weybridge, Surrey. Former residents of the estate include singer Elton John, former Beatle Ringo Starr and Hollywood actress Kate Winslet.

However, a gang of six squatters have moved into this abandoned three million pound property and claim that it is legal for them to move here as the lock was already broken and they plan to stay as long as possible.

'It is legal for me to be here. I found the place on Google maps so I came up to have a look and the place was open. The locks had been broken off, no one was living here, it was completely open - so why not?' a squatter named Stefan Cybulski said.

The celebrity residents of the estate want to send these people out but the law seems to be in their favor.

'It does seem pretty extraordinary that the police can't do anything to get these people off the estate,' a resident said adding, 'They have no right to be here, yet the law appears to be on their side - it's completely wrong.'

As of now, the property is under surveillance of a security guard and the police have also set up extra patrol of the area.

Pakistan Cricket Board unhappy with Afridi remarks on PCB

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday revoked the No Objection Certificate (NOC) granted to Shahid Afridi that will prevent the retired cricketer to play in county cricket and other Twenty20 leagues.

A day after Afridi announced his retirement and blamed PCB's ill-treatment towards him as the reason for his decision, the board also issued him a show-cause notice.

The Board's action means that Afridi will be disallowed from playing for Hampshire in a Twenty20 tournament. Afridi is already in England to begin his stint for Hampshire. He will also have to stay away from the inaugural edition of the Sri Lankan Premier League to be held later this month.

In a statement, released Tuesday, the PCB accused Afridi of violating the board's code of conduct.

"PCB has initiated action against Shahid Afridi in response to the following breaches he has committed under the Central Contract signed with PCB," said the statement.

"By announcing his retirement in the manner that he did Shahid Afridi is in breach of Clause 2.1.4 of the Central Contract dealing with Covenants of the Cricketer," it said.

"In passing disparaging remarks about the board and its officials, Shahid Afridi is in breach of Clause 4.4 dealing with Media obligations."

The PCB has given Afridi seven days to respond to its show-cause notice.

"His (Afridi's) Central Contract has been suspended with immediate effect. Consequently, all NOCs granted to him have been revoked.

"All payments on account of Central Contract have been suspended," the statement concluded.

Formula 1: Bahrain ready to host Formula 1 Grand Prix

Bahrain Grand Prix organisers have asked Formula 1's governing body to reschedule rather than cancel its race.

The Gulf kingdom was scheduled to host the opening race of the 2011 season but it was called off amid civil unrest.

Governing body, the FIA, will meet on 3 June to discuss the future of the race and, for the first time, Bahrain say they are ready to hold the Grand Prix.

"We feel we are in position to have the event back," said Bahrain International Circuit chairman Zayed Rashid Alzayani.

Alzayani said he was hopeful it will be held in October or November to coincide with the Abu Dhabi GP on 13 November.

If Bahrain is restored to the 2011 calendar, it has been suggested it could become the penultimate race of the season.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is believed to be considering 20 November, the week after the Abu Dhabi GP, which could mean the season-ending race in Brazil, scheduled for 27 November, is moved back by a week.

Ecclestone is considering moving the Indian GP back to 11 December - or cancelling it - in order to accommodate the return of the Bahrain race to the calendar.

Bahrain's race had been scheduled for 13 March but was called off in February because of anti-government protests.

Bahrain's Crown Prince made the decision to cancel the race, with Ecclestone commenting at the time that it was the right choice.

"Things have calmed down tremendously in Bahrain. Life is back to normal. We are happy to have the race anytime really," added Alzayani.

"We went through a rough patch and we need nice moments in our history now for the nation.

"Formula 1 has always been a time where Bahrain showcases itself to the world not only as a sports arena but as society, a community that Bahrain as a nation has to offer. Formula 1 can bring back joy to the country."

The decision on whether the race goes ahead, and when, will be made during Friday's World Motor Sport Council meeting in Barcelona.

India and Pakistan talks failed to agree on the modalities for demilitarisation of Siachen

India and Pakistan on Tuesday failed to agree on the modalities for demilitarisation of Siachen but decided to continue talks to arrive at a solution to one of the major vexed issue.

While both sides being in principle agreement over demilitarisation of the once world's highest battlefield, India is insisting that Pakistan should authenticate present troop position of the two sides.

At the end of the two-day defence secretary-level talks, the two sides issued a joint statement saying the present dialogue has "enhanced understanding" of each other's position and they have agreed to continue the discussions in a "meaningful and result-oriented manner".

The two sides, discussing the issue after a gap of three years, presented their positions and suggestions to each other towards resolution of Siachen issue, the statement said.

At the end of the meeting, Pakistani side handed over a 'non-paper' (an unofficial document) on Siachen which contained its stated position on demilitarisation and other related issues.

The Indian side said it would "study" it and discuss with Pakistan when the both sides meet next time.

Sources said the mention of non-paper was made in the joint statement following Pakistan's request.

"Both Sides welcomed the ongoing dialogue process. The discussions were held in a frank and cordial atmosphere,.." the joint statement said.

"They (the delegations from the two sides) also acknowledged that the ceasefire was holding since November 2003. Both sides presented their positions and suggestions towards resolution of Siachen (issue)," it said.

Arnold never got physical with me or any other female staffer says Maria Shriver

A former nanny to Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver has claimed that the governator had a wandering eye, but never got physical with her or any other female staffer.

The nanny - who worked with the couple during the Mildred "Patty" Baena years – told TMZ the actor was a strict one household staffer type of guy.

Arnold "was a flirt, but he never touched me inappropriately, or anyone else that I could tell," she said.

The former staffer believes Patty must have aggressively pursued Arnie since - as far as she could tell - he was "respectful" of all the other female staffers.

Francesca Schiavone reaches semis in women singles

Defending champion Francesca Schiavone fought back from a set and 4-1 down to beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and reach the semi-finals of the French Open.

Pavlyuchenkova, the Russian 15th seed, broke three times to take the first set 6-1 and was within two games of her first Grand Slam semi-final.

But the Italian fifth seed turned the match on its head, edging a thrilling final set to triumph 1-6 7-5 7-5.

Schiavone will next play Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova or Marion Bartoli.

Pavlyuchenkova, the 2006 world junior champion, raced into a 4-0 lead in the opening set and clinched a third break in the seventh game to take the set 6-1.

The Italian, struggling with the windy conditions on Court Philippe Chatrier, won just two points on the 19-year-old's serve in a dismal performance.

It was a similar story in the second set as the Russian took a 4-1 lead but Schiavone dug deep to win six of the next seven games and take the match to a decider.

Schiavone landed a running backhand pass to break in the first game of the third set and seemed to be cruising to victory at 5-1.

But she imploded when serving for the match, losing the game to love and allowing Pavlyuchenkova to level at 5-5.

Schiavone broke serve to regain the initiative and, after seeing two match points saved by the Russian, she sealed victory with a forehand winner.

Schiavone, who became the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam when she beat Sam Stosur in last year's final, admitted she would have to raise her game if she is to repeat the feat this year.

"It was very difficult for me at the start of the match. I did not play well, I hope I will play better in the semi-final because this crowd deserve to see good tennis," said the 30-year-old.

"To win the title again I will have to beat two great players."

Julianna Margulies denied a offer as a 'lesbian porn star'

Actress Julianna Margulies has admitted that she was secretly "thrilled" on being offered a movie role as a 'lesbian porn star', but turned it down for the sake of her young child.

"I love the role I play, and I work 10 months out of the year, so the 10 weeks I have off - it's just not worth it to me to do another project. There's been some interesting offers this year because I said, 'Well, if I do anything, it should be really opposite of what I do' - and I got offered a porn movie," Contactmusic quoted her as telling The Hollywood Reporter.

'The Good Wife' star got the script for the movie after admitting she'd love to take on a job completely different from the hit legal drama. However, she didn't expect to be asked to play such a raunchy role.

Margulies, 44, acknowledged that the movie wasn't exactly porn, but the character she was offered was too risqué for her liking.

"It's not a porn. James Franco is doing it and attracting all these people. But I was like, ultimately: 'I'm a lesbian porn star going down on women? I can't. I have a child. It wasn't that I was insulted by it. I was actually thrilled by it," she explained.

Spain angry at German claims on cucumber scare

Spain has expressed anger at links being made between Spanish cucumbers and a deadly E. coli outbreak.

The country's agriculture minister said Germany pointed to Spanish cucumbers "without having reliable data".

Meanwhile, German officials have voiced doubts about whether the Spanish cucumbers they are investigating carried the deadly E. coli strain.

The outbreak has led to 16 deaths - 15 in Germany and a woman who died in Sweden after travelling to Germany.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany's national disease institute, says more than 1,150 people within Germany have been affected by enterohaemorrhagic E. coli, also known as EHEC.

In many instances, the gastrointestinal infection has led to Haemolytic-uraemic Syndrome (HUS), which causes kidney problems and is potentially fatal.

'Domino effect'
The RKI has confirmed 373 cases of HUS in Germany.

German authorities initially pointed to organic cucumbers from Spain.

But Spanish officials have refused to accept the blame, saying it is still unclear exactly when and where the vegetables were contaminated.

Spanish Agriculture Minister Rosa Aguilar said: "We are disappointed by the way Germany handles the situation."

"We want Germany to provide, without any delay and distractions, the necessary information of its investigation so that the European Union can know what is causing the E. coli outbreak."

Speaking at an EU meeting in Hungary, she also said the issue should be treated as a "common problem" and that there should be compensation for Spanish and other European producers affected.

The Netherlands has also said it will ask for compensation.

The president of Spain's fruit and vegetable export federation has urged the government to deal with the outbreak, saying it was costing Spanish exporters $200m (£120m) a week.

Asked which countries had stopped buying Spanish produce, Jorge Brotons was quoted as telling a news conference: "Almost all Europe. There is a domino effect on all vegetables and fruits."

'Outbreak could worsen'
Authorities in Hamburg said four suspect cucumbers found there last week - including three imported from Spain - were carrying EHEC, but not the same kind found in patients.

"As before the source remains unidentified," Hamburg state health minister Cornelia Pruefer-Storcks said.

"Our hope of discovering the source of the cases of severe complications with HUS unfortunately has not been fulfilled by these first results."

She also defended the decision to link the outbreak to Spanish cucumbers last week.

"It would have been irresponsible with this number of ill people to keep quiet about a well-grounded suspicion," she said. "Protecting people's lives is more important than economic interests."

Earlier, a senior German scientist warned that the outbreak could worsen.

"We hope the number of cases will go down but we fear it will worsen," said Oliver Grieve, of the University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein, where many victims are being treated.

German authorities have warned people to avoid eating raw cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce.

In Sweden, authorities said there were 39 suspected E. coli infections, including 15 with HUS.

On Tuesday, Swedish authorities said a woman in her 50s had died in hospital, after being admitted on Sunday following a trip to Germany.

Cases have also been reported in Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK.

Several countries have taken steps to curtail the outbreak, such as banning cucumber imports and removing the vegetables from sale.

House prices in US fell in March, dipping below their 2009 low

US house prices fell in March, dipping below their 2009 low, as the housing market continued to be affected by weak demand, an index has shown.

The Case-Shiller housing index, which tracks 20 metropolitan areas, fell 0.2% in March from February on a seasonally adjusted basis, in line with forecasts.

The index dropped to 138.16, falling below the 139.26 seen in April 2009.

Prices in 19 of the 20 cities covered were lower than a year ago, with 12 cities seeing new index lows.

"This month's report is marked by the confirmation of a double-dip in home prices across much of the nation," said David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at Standard & Poor's, which compiles the index.

"Home prices continue on their downward spiral with no relief in sight."

Football: Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes announces retirement

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has announced his retirement from playing football but will remain at the club in a coaching capacity.

Scholes, who came through the United academy as part of the club's famous group of youngsters in the mid 1990's, played more than 650 times for the Old Trafford outfit and is widely acknowledged as the finest English footballer of his generation.

A one club man, Scholes picked up 24 winners medals during his time with the Red Devils, including 10 Premier League wins and two Champions League successes after making his debut in Sepember 1994.

However, having struggled to secure first-team football this season, the 36-year old has opted not to sign a new playing contract at the club but will remain alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in a coaching role.

In a statement released on the club's official site, Scholes said: "I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say that playing football is all I have ever wanted to do and to have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United has been a real honour.

"This was not a decision that I have taken lightly but I feel now is the right time for me to stop playing. To have been part of the team that helped the club reach that 19th title is a great privilege.

"I would like to thank the fans for their tremendous support throughout my career, I would also like to thank all the coaches and players that I have worked with over the years, but most of all I would like to thank Sir Alex for being such a great manager, from the day I joined the club his door has always been open and I know this team will go on to win many more trophies under his leadership."

Ferguson has led the tributes to the man nicknamed the "ginger prince" at Old Trafford, stating that Scholes is an inspirational figure.

He said: "What more can I say about Paul Scholes that I haven't said before. We are going to miss a truly unbelievable player. Paul has always been fully committed to this club and I am delighted he will be joining the coaching staff from next season.

"Paul has always been inspirational to players of all ages and we know that will continue in his new role."

The club's chief executive, David Gill, has also paid tribute to the veteran. He said: "It is very sad day for Manchester United fans around the world. We all know that Paul was one of the players that came through the ranks of the academy system in the 1990's and has established himself as one of the greatest players to ever wear the United shirt.

"It is very important that the club keeps its association with these great players and we are delighted that Paul will join the coaching staff."

US withdraws former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's security & protocol

The US administration has withdrawn the security and protocol given to former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf after a UN commission report blamed him for not providing adequate protection to slain former premier Benazir Bhutto.

But in contrast, Britain and the UAE have beefed up his security in light of threats following the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The US administration withdrew 67-year-old Musharraf's security and protocol after a UN commission's report on former premier Benazir Bhutto's assassination blamed the military ruler for failing to provide her adequate security.

Musharraf is treated like an ordinary citizen who has to join queues at the immigration counter in airports and undergo a thorough body search at the departure lounge, The News daily quoted diplomatic sources in Washington as saying.

"Musharraf, in the past, would have his immigration process expedited after landing at US airports," said a diplomatic source at the Pakistani embassy in Washington.

Instead of waiting in line, the American protocol staff would do this on Musharraf's behalf.

"It has been stopped now," the source said.

When Musharraf departs from the US, he stands in line, takes off his shoes and belt, has his hands up for a thorough search and only then is cleared for check-in, said a source.

On the other hand, Britain and the UAE have increased his security cover.

The reason for enhancing Musharraf's security in these two countries is the threats he has been receiving after the killing of bin Laden, according to his spokesman Chaudhry Fawad.

Musharraf, who has been living in self-exile outside Pakistan since 2009, is usually based in London and frequently travels to Dubai.

Fawad claims Musharraf is the only foreign leader in Britain who is provided more security than that granted to former premier Tony Blair.

Adding to Musharraf's woes, a court conducting the trial of five suspects charged with involvement in Benazir Bhutto's assassination on Monday declared him a "proclaimed offender" or fugitive for failing to cooperate with investigators.

On the other hand, Musharraf has started efforts to find new political allies for his All Pakistan Muslim League party and Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf is one of them.

Khan's party has instructed its chapters in Western countries not to speak against Musharraf or organise any protests against him.

This fact was confirmed by a spokesman for Khan's party.

"We want the party's overseas organisations to remain focused on relatively more important issues. Unnecessary meddling must be restrained," Umar Sarfraz Cheema said.

Khan was recently gifted a puppy by Musharraf, who often used to criticise the cricketer-turned-politician.

The puppy was born at a kennel at Musharraf's farmhouse in Islamabad.

Football: FA and SFA ask FIFA to postpone election

The Football Association and the Scottish Football Association have called for Fifa to postpone its presidential election.

Current president Sepp Blatter is the only candidate for the 1 June election after Mohamed Bin Hammam's withdrawal.

The FA now wants the vote delayed and an independent body to recommend "improved governance" of Fifa.

An SFA statement added: "The election should be rescheduled to facilitate a period of consultation."

The United Kingdom Home Nations are due to have discussions on Tuesday to discuss a joint stance.

'Discussions are going to happen in the next 24 hours and that [calling for the election to be postponed] will be a topic of conversation,'' Jonathan Ford, the FA of Wales chief executive, told.

The English FA recently chose to abstain from voting following allegations of corruption against world football's governing body.

FA chairman David Bernstein said in a statement: "On 19 May, 2011 the Football Association announced it would be abstaining in the forthcoming election for the Fifa presidency.

"There were two main reasons for this decision. First, a concern, that a series of allegations relating to Fifa ExCo Members made it difficult to support either candidate.

"Secondly, a concern about the lack of transparency and accountability within the organisation, contributing to the current unsatisfactory situation.

"Events of the last few days have reinforced our views, and we call on Fifa and ask other national associations to support us with two initiatives.

"First, to postpone the election and give credibility to this process, so any alternative reforming candidate could have the opportunity to stand for president.

"Secondly, to appoint a genuinely independent external party to make recommendations regarding improved governance and compliance procedures and structures throughout the Fifa decision-making processes for consideration by the full membership.

"This has been a very damaging time for the reputation of Fifa and therefore the whole of football.

"To improve confidence in the way the game is governed at the very top, we believe these requests would be a positive step forward and the minimum that should take place."

The SFA later added to the growing concern over the running of football's world governing body.

"The events of the last two days, in particular, have made any election unworkable," added its statement. "The integrity and reputation of the game across the world is paramount and the Scottish FA urges Fifa to reconsider its intentions, and calls on other member associations to consider the long-term implications for the game's image.

"We also propose the following actions: Fifa should appoint a wholly independent ethics committee; a significant comprehensive plan should be formulated and presented by Fifa to its members regarding essential changes to its governance, decision-making processes and transparency; a new date is set for the presidential election, giving suitable candidates time to prepare and present their plans for a more transparent and accountable Fifa."

Whether the two FAs will receive the support of their counterparts remains to be seen but Blatter, speaking defiantly at a news conference on Monday, seemed set on making sure the presidential election went ahead unless three quarters of Fifa's congress of 208 voted otherwise.

Blatter, 75, is vying to be re-elected for a fourth term and, despite insisting Fifa was not in crisis, the FA's latest move comes amid world football's governing body being undermined by a series of corruption allegations.

Following question marks being raised over the legitimacy of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding processes, the Fifa presidential election race has been tarnished by further claims of wrongdoings.

Bin Hammam, president of the Asian Football Federation (AFC), and Fifa vice-president Jack Warner have been provisionally suspended by Fifa's ethics committee over allegations that financial incentives were offered to Caribbean Football Union members.

Blatter was also investigated following a charge against him by Bin Hammam, although Fifa's ethics committee did not find the president had a case to answer.

Bin Hammam has appealed against his ban, while Warner revealed an e-mail in which Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke suggested Bin Hammam "bought" the 2022 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar.

Valcke responded by saying his remarks were taken out of context before the latest twist to the turmoil surrounding Fifa resulted in major sponsors Coca-Cola, Adidas, Emirates and Visa expressing their concern at the damage being done to Fifa by the alleged claims of corruption.

Meanwhile, anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International backed calls for an independent body to delve into the goings on within Fifa.

"Free and fair elections cannot take place when there is a suspicion that voters may have been swayed," Sylvia Schenk, senior advisor on sport to TI, said in a statement.

"Fifa delegates know that they must clean house if their vote is to have legitimacy."

No tax return filing for income less than rs 5 Lakh per annum

As many as 85 lakh salaried tax payers with an annual income of up to Rs 5 lakh will not have to file income-tax returns from now, a finance ministry official said.

"No income-tax returns would be required for salaried persons earning up to Rs 5 lakh per annum. We would notify this in first week of June," outgoing Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes Sudhir Chandra told reporters here.

The scheme would be applicable from assessment year 2011-12 onwards.

This means that the salaried persons eligible under the scheme would not have to file returns for the financial year 2010-11 in 2011-12 (assessment year).

However, such tax payers would have to file returns if they want to claim refunds, Chandra said.

As per the Memorandum to the Finance Bill 2011, the government will be issuing a notification exempting 'classes of persons' from the requirement of furnishing income tax returns.

In case such a salary earner has income from other sources like dividend, interest etc and does not want to file returns, he would have to disclose such income to his employer for tax deduction.

In the scenario, the Form 16 issued to salaried employees will be treated as Income Tax Return.

The idea behind the move is that in cases where there are no other sources of income, filing of a return is a duplication of existing information.

Indian Oil Corporation increases petrol prices by Rs. 1.35 per litre from June 1st

State-owned Indian Oil Corporation, the nation's largest fuel retailer, on Tuesday announced that petrol prices will go up by Rs 1.35 per litre with effect from June 1.

The IOC says the May 15 hike in petrol prices by Rs 5 is not enough to cover the cost of crude oil and refining it.

"Even after the hike, we are losing Rs 4.58 per litre. After including VAT, the desired increase at retail level comes to Rs 5.50 a litre," IOC Chairman RS Butola said in New Delhi.

The IOC says this is because the Government doesn't compensate the company for selling petrol below market rates.

Similarly, on domestic LPG India Oil is losing Rs 380.57 per cylinder and Rs 25.85 a litre on PDS kerosene.

An Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is likely to meet on June 9 to consider raising prices of the three controlled commodities -- diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene.

Delhi International Airport offers "park and fly" facility

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the operator of IGI airport, is offering "park and fly" facility to the passengers flying out of Terminal 3.

"With 'Park N Fly', the passengers would have the convenience of parking their cars for an extended number of days at the multi-level car parking (MLCP), when they fly out of T3," a DIAL spokesperson said.

The passenger wanting to avail of this facility will have to pay Rs 500 for the first day, Rs 400 for the second day and Rs 300 for every additional day as parking charges at the MLCP.

DIAL said these slabs are over 45 per cent cheaper than the standard parking charges.

The premium parking charge for 24 hours is Rs 900 while general parking charge is Rs 600.

So, parking a car at premium car parking for three days would cost Rs 2,700 and at general parking Rs 1,800 but if somebody uses 'Park N Fly' facility, they would be paying just Rs 1,200, the spokesperson said.

The facilities that are available at the premium parking area on the ground level include dedicated customer service desk, secured and well guarded parking space with CCTV cameras, and a dedicated fire fighting system.

The parking area is connected to T3 through a corridor at ground level and via air-conditioned skywalk with travelators on the second level. The parking is also connected to the Airport Metro Express Line, he said.

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan denies 2G link

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan on Tuesday denied any 2G link and said that Cineyug Films Director Karim Morani is not an investor in his film production company Red Chillies Entertainment.

He said that his links with 2G scam accused Karim Morani are only personal and not professional.

"I have personal relations with the Moranis, but they have not made any investments in Red Chillies. The law will take its own course, let's not sensationalise the issue by dragging Bollywood stars into it," said Shah Rukh.

The Patiala House Court on Monday rejected Karim Morani's bail petition in the 2G spectrum scam case and sent him to judicial custody. He was arrested soon after his bail petition was rejected.

Morani is accused of facilitating kickbacks to Kalaignar TV and was allegedly instrumental in the transfer of Rs 214 crore from Shahid Balwa-promoted DB Realty to Kalaignar TV in which Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar have a stake of 20 per cent each.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged that Morani took Rs 6 crore for facilitating the Rs 214 crore transaction. The court did not accepted the plea of the accused that he was entitled for bail as he was not arrested during the investigation of the case.

Andy Murray beat Victor Troicki 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 to reach quarters

Lethargic at times and brooding at others, Andy Murray worked his way into the French Open quarterfinals by coming back to beat Victor Troicki 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 on Tuesday in a match that started a day earlier.

The three-time Grand Slam runner-up won the final five games of the fifth set despite injuring his right ankle in the previous round. The first four sets were played Monday before darkness suspended the match.

Murray looked out of it in the opening two sets on Court Suzanne Lenglen, often pacing around the clay with his head low and sometimes screaming to no one in particular. But he soon started placing his shots and quickly worked his way back into the match before play was suspended.

Man arrested with 1kg cocaine in his stomach at Bangkok's international airport

A Peruvian man has been arrested at Bangkok's international airport after an x-ray allegedly revealed he had more than a kilogram of cocaine concealed in his stomach.

Officials claim the drug was wrapped in 123 plastic capsules.

Customs officers say they stopped Jose Carlos Paredes Cordova on a hunch as he passed through Suvarnabhumi airport on Monday.

The 35-year-old had flown in from Sao Paolo via Qatar.

Cordova said he was offered 5-thousand US dollars to carry the drugs into Thailand.

He said it was the first time he had done it, and that he was ashamed of what he had done.

Customs officers have arrested 34 people at the airport for drugs smuggling since October last year.

A 19-year-old Muslim girl killed in Ukraine for joining beauty contest

A 19-year-old Muslim girl was stoned to death in Ukraine under the Islamic Sharia law after she took part in a beauty contest, a media report said on Tuesday.

Katya Koren was found dead in her village. Her battered body was buried in a forest and was found a week after she disappeared, the Daily Mail reported.

Koren's friends said she had come seventh in a beauty contest.

Police are now looking into claims that three Muslim youths killed her.

One of the three youths - a 16-year-old named Bihal Gaziev - is under arrest. He told police that Koren had "violated the laws of Sharia", and that he has no regrets about her death.

Tennis: Wimbledon matches to be filmed in 3D format

Grand Slam tennis tournament Wimbledon is going the 3D way.

The men's semifinals and men's and women's finals at this summer's tournament will be filmed in the new format and aired live by 3D-capable cinemas around the world. Organisers say they were impressed with Sony's 3D broadcast during last year's football World Cup and the the association with Sony will only add the magic to tennis.
The deal was announced on Monday as part of the Wimbledon's multi-year partnership with Sony.

All England Club chief executive Ian Ritchie says "Wimbledon is renowned for its heritage and sense of tradition. At the same time we are always looking for ways to improve the presentation of the championships by successfully blending that tradition with innovation."

'Friendship club' owner arrested for promising sex with models

An Andheri-based 'friendship club', a well-known euphemism for prostitution rackets, was raided on Monday and the owner arrested by the Mumbai Police Commissioner's Special Squad after they received several complaints of him cheating customers. Prasad Patkar (42) allegedly ran the prostitution racket under the guise of a friendship club out of a ground floor flat of a building near Navrang Cinema at JP Road, Andheri (West). Senior Inspector Rakesh Sharma of the Special Squad said more than 200 portfolios of small-time models, 21 mobile phones, laptops, television sets, several pan cards, cheque books and credit cards were recovered from him.

Sharma said Patkar had cheated customers out of lakhs of rupees by luring them into paying membership fees and refundable deposits to meet and date the models. He said they had been trying to trace Patkar for nearly a month.

Explaining the modus operandi, Sharma said, "Patkar had been running the racket for close to three years. He would publish advertisements under the head of a friendship club in newspapers and ask people to call certain numbers in order to meet and date attractive women. The calls would be answered by a receptionist in the 'office' who would tell the potential customers that they would need to pay Rs. 6,000 to become members."

"Once the membership fee was paid, they would show people the photographs of some models and college girls and then make them pay another Rs. 5,000 or so as a refundable deposit to get their numbers. After the money was paid, they would stop answering the calls of the customers. "Persistent callers would be given numbers of some women who would say that they have also paid a membership fee to the club and would charge between Rs. 5,000-20,000 an hour for sex," added Sharma.

Sharma said that they had handed Patkar over to the D N Nagar police, who would also investigate whether he was shooting pornographic films in the flat as cameras and CDs of such films were recovered from him. Patkar has been charged with cheating and for running a prostitution racket. Residents of the building from which Patkar was running the racket said they never suspected anything amiss. "There was a board put up beside the flat which said it housed a doctor's clinic. We had no clue that a prostitution racket was being run from here," said a resident on condition of anonymity.

TN Medical colleges demand Rs 25-45 lakh as capitation fee

Anticipating a huge demand for undergraduate medical admissions this year, private medical universities and colleges in Tamil Nadu have jacked up charges for MBBS admission - application forms, tuition fee and the illegal capitation fee.

At the DD Naidu Medical College , the application form for the entrance exam costs Rs 25,000. Students who qualify will have to buy another form for Rs 5,000. College chairman TD Naidu said the college charges 7.5 lakh per year for tuition, boarding and lodging fee for MBBS courses. Deemed universities like Sri Ramachandra University charge 6.5 lakh as annual tuition fee, while SRM Medical College and Chettinad Medical College charge Rs 4 lakh per year.

Some parents said that medical colleges also demand capitation fees ranging between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 45 lakh. Stung by media investigations that exposed the practice of capitation fees, colleges are taking precautions. Some have security personnel to thoroughly frisk parents who go to remit capitation fees.

"I was shocked when one office assistant asked me to deposit my handbag, mobile phone and pens at a counter before meeting the admission officer. When I went in, they said I will have to pay capitation fee of Rs 35 lakh," said Sandhya Shankar, who went to a medical college's administrative office in the city seeking admission for her son.

Intel introduces laptops with tablet features

Intel unveiled a new category of laptops that it says will include the best features of tablets as the world's top chipmaker struggles to find its footing in the exploding market for mobile gadgets.

Netbook pioneer Asustek showed its first new PC in Intel's "Ultrabook" class, the UX series, on Monday at the Computex computer show in Taipei. Intel said models made by other manufacturers would go on sale by Christmas and cost under $1,000.

Ultrabooks will be svelte and lightweight but still pack high-performance processors. They should account for 40% of laptop sales to consumers by the end of next year, Tom Kilroy, a senior vice president at Intel, told Reuters in an interview in San Francisco.
"We're shooting for ultra responsive. You'll have always-on, always-connected, much more responsive devices, similar to what you would see with a tablet today such as an iPad," he said.

In Taipei on Tuesday, Intel's vice president Mooly Eden called the Ultrabook a "different category" from the tablet and notebook, hoping that it would appeal to a different category of consumers.

"There'll be some confusion if you look at the fold factor; when you open it you'll see a PC but if you're on the go, just fold it and suddenly it's a tablet. Is it a PC? Is it a tablet? I think it doesn't matter," Eden told a media conference.

Santa Clara, California-based Intel is eager to make laptops more attractive to consumers who are increasingly captivated by Apple's iPad and other mobile gadgets.

Its processors power 80% of the world's PCs but Intel has failed so far to adapt them for smartphones and tablets. Manufacturers like Motorola and Apple favour processors made using energy-efficient technology licensed by Britain's ARM Holdings.

Commenting on competition with ARM, Eden said Intel is late in the tablet market but it is not a "failure".

"We're late. Today there are many tablets that don't have Intel inside, but we're putting in a lot of effort in order to catch up. And I believe we have caught up in tablets."

This month, Intel took the wraps off next-generation "3D" technology that crams more transistors onto microchips, betting it will eventually become a significant advantage in tablets and smartphones.

Intel also plans to shrink the circuits on its mobile chips by three sizes within three years, a faster pace than normal, to make them much more efficient.

Kilroy declined to comment on recent speculation that PC maker Acer Inc is planning to launch a tablet within months using Intel's brand new Oak Trail chip and Google's Android operating system. Acer could not be reached for comment.

Such a device would be a major test of Oak Trail, Intel's first chip designed specifically for tablets and able to support the widely popular Android platform.

The Ultrabook is not the first PC category that Intel and Asus have promoted together. In 2007, Asus introduced a small and simplified laptop that is widely viewed as the first of many low-cost "netbooks" geared toward surfing the Internet.

Kilroy said that prices for Ultrabook laptops would likely fall to around $600 within a couple of years.

Maruti to invest 18K Crore in Gujarat, expresses in a meeting with Modi

Maruti Suzuki in a meeting held with the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, on Tuesday expressed its intention to set up a manufacturing plant in the state having production capacity of 10 lakh units per annum, expandable up to 20 lakh.

Managing Director of Maruti Suzuki, Mr Shinzo Nakanishi, and Chairman, Mr R C Bhargava, during their meeting with the Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, said that Gujarat would be their first preference for the expansion project, a statement released by the state government said.

They hoped that the location of the site and other formalities for the phase—I of the project would get completed in three months and the plant could go on stream in five years, it said adding the plant would generate employment for nearly 1.50 lakh people.

Official sources close to the development said the company has zeroed in on a location near Sanand where Tata Motors' plant to make Nano is also situated.

The Gujarat government and the company top brass have expressed satisfaction over today's meeting.

"The attitude of the Chief Minister and the Government of Gujarat has been very positive," Mr R C Bhargava, told reporters after meeting Modi.

"For that reason, Gujarat certainly is a very strong probability for our expansion project," he said.

If the decision to set up the plant in Gujarat is finalised, it will be the first major investment by Maruti outside Haryana, where it has been present since its inception in 1983.

Nokia warns of weaker sales, shares drop 15 per cent

Mobile phone maker Nokia Oyj slashed its sales and profit outlook on Tuesday and scrapped forecasts for 2011 due to tumbling prices and intense competition, sending its shares crashing 15 per cent.

Nokia, once the undisputed force in the mobile phone market, has seen its position challenged in recent years, particularly losing ground in the smartphone market to newcomers Apple Inc

and Google Inc. The company, which is still the number one handset maker by volume, has overhauled its phone business, adopting Microsoft Corp's software instead of its own Symbian platform.

But it continues to suffer from mounting competition and said in a profit warning it expects net sales from its devices and services business in the second quarter to be "substantially below" its previous forecast of between 6.1 billion euros ($8.7 billion) and 6.6 billion.

It expected its non-IFRS operating margin for devices and services to be around break-even in the second quarter, rather than previously expected range of 6 per cent to 9 per cent.

"This update is primarily due to lower than previously expected average selling prices and mobile device volumes," the company said.

"Given the unexpected change in our outlook for the second quarter, Nokia believes it is no longer appropriate to provide annual targets for 2011," it said, adding it would still provide quarterly updates.

"Given the internal turmoil that will be generated by this news, it is increasingly difficult to see that Nokia can leapfrog one handset generation and be on par with the competition in early 2012. Investors should be more than concerned about the dividend possibility," said WestLB analyst Thomas Langer.

"It seems like it's especially their emerging markets exposure in China where they are hit by competition in the low end of the market," said Sydbank analyst Morten Imsgard.

"Short term, there's a lot of turmoil in the company." The warning comes a month after Nokia said it would cut 7,000 jobs and outsource its Symbian software development unit to cut costs.

The shares were down 14.9 per cent at 4.908 euros at 1317 GMT.

2G Scam: Dayanidhi Maran the next man from DMK to face the Music

Move over A Raja; it's time for Dayanidhi Maran to face the 2G fire.

With the case against Raja close to being wrapped up, the Opposition trained its guns on his predecessor who was telecom Minister in 2007.

The immediate provocation came from a cover-story done by newsmagazine Tehelka which questioned the circumstances in which Maran's granted a license to Aircel in 2007.

"Now we are asking very specific questions from Mr Dayanidhi Maran. Is it a fact that Maxis Communications has invested substantial amount in the family-owned company of Dayanidhi Maran - the Sun TV of Sun Direct? Secondly, was this investment done before Maxis Communication purchased Aircel or thereafter? And if it is true, is it not a case of direct conflict of interest? Because we need to know that the entire power to determine the price of spectrum was taken out of the purview of GoM upon the insistence of Dayanidhi Maran when he was the Telecom Minister. And we would like Mr Dayanidhi Maran to reply to these very specific questions which we are raising today, a reply to which is important in national interest," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

The allegation against Dayanidhi Maran is that Aircel, previously denied a telecom license for over two years, was finally given only when its owners changed hands - to Malaysia based Maxis.

The charge is that Mr Maran cleared the decks only after a sister company of Maxis invested Rs. 675 crore in Maran-owned Sun TV, which the BJP calls a conflict of interest.

The DMK leader has rubbished the charges. Sending a legal notice to Tehellka, Maran calls the charges "blatantly concocted".

In a statement, released through his lawyers, the Textile Minister said, ""The reports published in the magazine are totally false, defamatory, derogatory and has been published with a malafide intention and ulterior motive. He has no shareholding or interest in any form in Sun-Direct TV and it is a separate legal entity and it is no way connected with its business transactions."

The bad news for Mr Maran, however, is that the Congress appears to have all but abandoned him.

"If Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran has been asked a few questions, he's in the best position to answer them. But I must mention here that the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is doing its job. It will examine all issues including the telecom policy through the years," Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said.

The government appointed Justice Shivraj Patil Committee too has said in its report that the initial delay in giving the licences to Aircel was vague and irrelevant.

CBI sources say the Aircel deal is already part of their preliminary enquiry into the grant of licences between 2001 and 2007, and any criminality on Maran's part was yet to be established.

Suresh Raina hopes his experience in West Indies help Indian team

Suresh Raina, India's skipper for the limited-overs series in West Indies, said on Tuesday that it was a great honour for him to have been appointed as the captain of the national side for the tour.

Speaking to members of the press before the Board of Control for Cricket in India's awards ceremony here, Raina said that he felt proud to have been given the responsibility. "I am looking forward to the opportunity and hope to take the team to success on the tour," he said.

Raina was appointed to lead the side after Gautam Gambhir was ruled out of the series with a shoulder injury. India's World Cup winning captain MS Dhoni had already been asked to rest by the cricket board though he will resume duty for the 3 Test-match series that follow the ODI matches.

The player from Uttar Pradesh also mentioned that some of the young-stars included in the side are raring to showcase their talent at the international arena after performing well in the domestic circuit. "There are players who have been included in the side who have done very well in first-class matches. The tour will be a good opportunity for all of them."

Raina also said his experience in the Caribbean will help world champion India maintain a successful run during the limited-overs leg of the upcoming tour of West Indies.

On the eve of the team's departure on Tuesday, he notes he's been to West Indies in 2006 and for the World Cup in 2007. He also says he's learned a lot under previous skippers Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Anil Kumble, and Rahul Dravid.

He says "I hope to put all my experience to good use."

India will also be under the guidance of new coach Duncan Fletcher and Raina added that the team under it's new coach was absolutely ready for the West Indies.

Little Johnny Joke

A Sunday school teacher is concerned that his students might be a little confused about Jesus, so he asks his class, "Where is Jesus today?"

Steven raises his hand and says, "He's in Heaven."

Mary answers, "He's in my heart."

Little Johnny waves his hand furiously and blurts out, "He's in our bathroom!"

The surprised teacher asks Little Johnny how he knows this.

"Well," Little Johnny says, "every morning, my father gets up, bangs on the bathroom door and yells 'Jesus Christ, are you still in there?!'"

HOBBY IDEAS

Tired of the daily grind? Have daily chores become so mechanical and boring, you can do them with your eyes closed? Give fresh direction to your life with a hobby.

Enroll yourself in a craft or language class, turn wax into aroma candles, dabble in photography...the options are endless. Remember, it is never too late to inculcate a new interest, no matter how busy or old you are.

Having a hobby is such a great way to de-stress that even therapists recommend it to patients as a means of relaxation. Put your heart into a new hobby and watch that negative energy evaporate. In addition to bringing you peace of mind, your little ventures can help you meet new people and make friends who will share your passions like reiki or rock climbing.

How do you select a new hobby?

Your first step to a fulfilling hobby would be identifying your interests. For those with a creative streak, the world of arts and crafts is waiting. For example, if you have a good voice or an ear for music, if you can differentiate the fine nuances or rhythms in songs, pursuing music can open many gates: learning instruments, online compiling and sharing songs, enrolling in associations which organize concerts, etc.

Make sure your hobby springs out of an innate desire or anything you always yearned to do. This way you will never lose your steam.

Read up as much as you can about your new interest. The Internet is a gigantic storehouse of knowledge.

Do your calculations. Ensure that your hobby is sustainable in the long run. If you enjoy photography, factor in the cost of purchasing expensive equipment, which could get even more expensive as your interest deepens. Buying a digital camera now might be a good idea because you can see and edit your pictures before printing them, and so get even more involved in your hobby.

After going through the basics, compile a list of teaching centers or associations you can learn and practice your skills. If you are on an art quest, keep your eyes open for art appreciation workshops and exhibitions taking place in your city.

After honing your skills, get set for the next level where you get a chance to display them. Participate in competitions, fairs and exhibitions. Those of you with green fingers will find the winter months to be a hectic and enjoyable period with various horticultural events in town.

Hobby ideas

Artistic hobbies like pottery, painting, word work, stained glass, art appreciation, dancing, singing, etc.
Home-based hobbies like interior decoration, gardening, cooking, feng shui, etc.
Sports-based hobbies like tennis, golf, badminton, chess, swimming, martial arts, etc.
Learning-based hobbies like learning languages, tarot cards, subjects, book societies, etc.
Computer-based hobbies like website designing, content writing, etc.
Spiritual and health-based hobbies like yoga, aromatherapy, reiki, acupressure, etc.
Collection-based hobbies like collecting stamps, pictures, antique artifacts, etc.
A hobby will be a joy forever if you don't lose patience, choose an expensive hobby, build it on negative interests like gambling or go about it in a haphazard and unorganized way. Above all, make sure you enjoy your hobby without compromising on your family time.

TURN ON THE HEAT

Here's the hot list of the twelve top things to wear, watch and do this summer. Check it out!

1. If you've been thinking of joining a gym but haven't gotten down to it so far, now's your chance. You will soon be shedding those layers and layers of clothes you've been wrapped up in for the winter season, and will be finally showing skin again. Make sure you're in shape and set to sizzle this summer.

2. Cool capris are the way to go to beat the heat. Get yourself a pair of beige ones. Team it up with a short white tee and you're on your way to looking wonderfully summery. Better yet, sleep in the buff. There's nothing more sensual or comfortable.

3. Drink a chilled glass of iced tea. You can now purchase readymade ice-tea packs with different flavours like peach, lemon. If you can't get hold of them, don't fret. Here's how to make a deliciously chilled glass of the chai. Boil tea leaves and sugar in a glass of water, chill, and add the juice of a lemon. Pour in a tall glass half filled with ice cubes. Mmmmm..

4. Chappals are cool, and look great when worn with capris. Pick up a few glittery, sequined ones in different colours to match your moods.

5. Water water everywhere. You can never have too much water so drink up as much as you can. Water rids your body of toxins and rejuvenates you.

6. Mash your favourite fruit a mango, a few strawberries or cherries, and toss them in a bowl of water. Pour the water into an ice tray and freeze. Toss these tangy ice cubes into your mouth whenever you need an instant refreshing pick-me-up.

7. Large basket-weave bags are very very la mode, and they look especially nice when teamed with capris. Try and get your hands on one this summer.

8. Go for an early morning jog. Get out just before dawn breaks, so you can catch the sunrise. How long has it been since you've seen a sunrise anyway.

9. Order a tub of chocolate ice-cream or whichever you fancy, call for a VCD or tape of Casablanca, sit down with your significant other or best friend, and watch it. It's recently been voted the most romantic movie of all time, so if you haven't seen it so far, you're missing out!

10. Pick out some gorgeous, huge sunflowers and place them in a vase in your dining room. Snip the ends diagonally they last longer and place them in warm water.

11. Too hot for you Get away this weekend. Head for the nearest hill-station. Don't opt for anything too exotic or too far. You don't want to spend a lot of time planning and traveling. Just pack your bags, get out of town for a short break, and return fresh and rarin to go!

12. Try out some steamy moves with your partner. Remember those ice cubes (pt. 7)Put them to good use. Guaranteed to make the temperature soar ever more!

TRICKS TO SLIM DOWN

Breakfast
Eat a heavy breakfast. Needless to say, 'heavy' does not include fried foods. Stick to corn flakes, brown toast, eggs and the like, and you will not feel so hungry at lunchtime. The best and healthiest way to go is to breakfast like a King, lunch like a Queen and dine like a pauper. If you're still confused, we'll translate for you: breakfast should be the heaviest meal of the day. Lunch should be lighter than breakfast, and dinner should be the lightest meal of the day.
Dinner

Try sticking to tasty soups, mixed (baked or boiled) vegetables with mayonnaise, and garlic bread, at night. Not only will you lose weight, but you will also give your much-abused digestive system, a much-needed break.
Green Tea

Did you know that green tea helps you lose weight (Not if you add two spoons of sugar with every cup, though!) Opt for green tea without sugar or milk, but with a dash of lime, and try and drink at least 3 cups a day. In addition to helping you burn calories, green tea is known for its anti-oxidant properties, and thus has great health benefits as well.
Spices

Be generous with sprinklings of spices like garlic, Tabasco sauce and green peppers. They actually increase your body's calorie burning activity by 25%. Could there be an easier way to lose weight
Yes! Surprise, surprise?
Sleep

Get enough sleep. If you feel your body has a slow metabolism, getting sufficient sleep is a great way to boost it. This does not mean that you sleep for forty days and forty nights at a stretch and expect to wake up skinny as a bamboo stick! Sorry, but you're just not that lucky. However, if your body is not getting sufficient sleep, it slows down your metabolism. Try and catch eight to nine hours of sleep every night; you will end up burning more calories than you did with just six or seven hours of sleep.
Lights

Did you know that dark rooms tend to make you feel low, and also cause you to overeat And if you are one of those people who tend to eat more when they are unhappy, it's time to lighten up! Brighten your room, liven up the atmosphere - don't live in dingy surroundings. Add some cheer to your home! Bin those 60-watt bulbs and place 100-watt bulbs in your room.
Incentives

Need some cutting edge incentive If you have fat upper arms, get a tattoo high up on your arm. You can then work towards losing weight on your arms to show it off. If you want to lose weight on your belly, pierce your belly button or get a tattoo on your waist, just above where you wear your trousers. You will be aching to flaunt it!

Clothes

Choose your clothes carefully:

If you have large hips, wear shoulder pads so your hips look like they are in proportion to your body. Make sure the shoulder pads are not too big, nor are they too prominent. One should not be able to make out that you are wearing them.
Don't wear clinging stuff in the hopes that it will make you look thin. Stay away from lycra.
Don't wear clothes that are too loose.
Steer clear from pleats.
Wear one colour from top to toe to give an illusion of slimness.
Wear fabrics like chiffon, that skim the body and show your curves, yet hide your fat.

Maria Sharapova enters into French Open Quarters

Russian seventh seed Maria Sharapova, the former world number one, edged Polish 12th seed Agnieszka Radwanska 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 to take her place in the French Open quarterfinals on Monday.

Sharapova, who fought back from 4-1 down in the first set and survived five set points in the second, will meet either 25th-seeded countrywoman Maria Kirilenko or German 15th seed Andrea Petkovic for a place in the semifinals.

The 24-year-old Sharapova, who previously hit back from a set and 4-1 down against French 17-year-old Caroline Garcia in round two, hit 47 winners and made 44 unforced errors in a performance full of contrasts.

Three times a Grand Slam winner, the Russian is bidding to better her previous best Roland Garros showing of a semifinal appearance in 2007.

A shaky start saw Sharapova fall 4-1 down and she narrowly avoided a 5-1 deficit by surviving two breaks before converting her fifth break point of the seventh game when Radwanska could not retrieve a stinging forehand.

Having hauled herself level, Sharapova went on to take the first set tie-break on her first set point.

Radwanska was powerless to return a bludgeoning first serve and Sharapova reacted by punching the air with relief.

After an initial exchange of breaks in a tightly contested second set, Sharapova blinked first to hand Radwanska a break when she misjudged a lofted forehand from the back of the court that landed a few inches long.

Sharapova had to save five set points - two at 5-3 down and three at 5-4 - before breaking back and then converting her first match point when Radwanska hit a backhand wide at the end of a gripping rally.

Cricket: "Boom Boom" Afridi announces retirement from international cricket

Shahid Afridi, Pakistan's captain at the 2011 World Cup, is reported by Geo TV in Pakistan to have announced his 'conditional' retirement from the international game.

"When I took over, the Pakistan team was in the middle of the spot-fixing crisis," Afridi was quoted as saying by the channel and by the Jang newspaper. "Then the Zulqarnain Haider case happened, but my side fought both against England and South Africa in the ODI series. Then we beat New Zealand in New Zealand, and we got to the semi-final of the World Cup, and beat the West Indies there as well. But the way I've been treated ... the future doesn't look too good. I can't play under a board that doesn't respect its players. Because of this, under protest, this is a conditional retirement."

Afridi, 31, had quit Test cricket last year after the first Test of Pakistan's tour of England, but remained an integral part of the limited-overs sides, which he continued to lead until the recent tour of the West Indies. He was, however, axed as captain despite Pakistan's 3-2 success in the ODI series, and replaced by Misbah-ul-Haq who has been in charge of the Test side as well. Though the board did not give official reasons for the removal, it was believed to be the result of growing differences Afridi had with coach Waqar Younis, in particular over matters of selection.

"We had very solid reasons to remove Afridi and I will reveal them when the time is right," PCB chairman Ijaz Butt had said. "We haven't taken this action without any reasons."

On his return from the Caribbean, Afridi referred to the situation with Waqar, saying, "Although the differences in team management are not such which could not be solved, I feel everyone should do his job and need not interfere in other's work". That led to the board issuing him a showcause notice to explain his remarks, and presumably formed part of the reasons for his removal. Subsequently Afridi decided to pull out of the two ODIs against Ireland; speculation was that he was unhappy over his ouster, though he said he had decided to miss the series due to his father's ill-health.

Afridi is not new to retirements. He first announced a temporary sabbatical from Test cricket in April 2006, in a bid to concentrate only on ODIs in the lead-up to the 2007 World Cup. But he then said that he would reconsider his 'retirement' after the World Cup. He later returned to the side, and even led Pakistan's Test side at the start of their tumultuous tour of England last summer. He, however, once again retired from the longest format, as soon as Pakistan lost the first Test against Australia at Lord's. Afridi was one of the culprits in Pakistan's spineless second-innings effort, holing out against part-timer Marcus North who ran through the line-up.

"With my temperament I can't play Test cricket," Afridi said then. "I wasn't interested in playing Test cricket but the board asked me to go and take a look as they didn't have a choice. But I wasn't really enjoying Test cricket but I tried. I wasn't good enough. A captain should lead by example which I did not."

Afridi was replaced by the then vice-captain Salman Butt, who held the reins until he was ousted following the spot-fixing scandal, at which stage Misbah took charge of the Test side. Afridi remained at the helm in the shorter versions, and led from the front as Pakistan outperformed in the lead-up to, and during, the 2011 World Cup.
