Doctor murdered inside jail in Bihar

In a shocking incident in Bihar, a doctor was beaten to death by prisoners inside Gopalganj jail for refusing to give them fake certificate.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when Dr Buddhadev Singh, brother of ex-MP Satyadeo Singh, went to the Gopalganj jail to treat a prisoner. Upon entering the jail, he was pushed down a flight of stairs and then mercilessly beaten up by a gang of prisoners. He died on the way to hospital.

"The doctor was requested to see Ranjan Yadav who was suffering from chicken pox. There he was beaten and succumbed midway while transferring to Patna," said Rajyawardhan Sharma ADG Headquarters, Bihar Police.

The gruesome act was committed by Ranjan Yadav and six of his men - all of them serving life imprisonments for kidnapping and murder. Yadav and two others wanted the fake medical certificates so that they would not be shifted to another prison.

"Ranjan Yadav and his men demanded fake medical certificates. When refused, they killed Singh," said Vijay Kumar, a relative of the deceased.

Shockingly, the murder was committed in full public view, in broad day light, inside the four walls of the prison. None of the prisoners who were witness to this act, dared to intervene and even the prison guards arrived at the scene only after the damage was already done.

"I saw the doctor bleeding. The doctor went inside the jail as he was told someone was ill. I wasn't on duty," said Kundan Dev, Police Inspector, Gopalganj.

An FIR has been registered against Ranjan Yadav and six other inmates, police said.

"FIR has been registered against the prisoners who are involved in the killing of the doctor. We cannot rule out whether there was a personal reason behind the killing of the doctor. They are convicted criminals and we will try to chargesheet them as soon as possible. We will ensure a speedy trail in the case and see to it that the criminals are brought to justices," said KS Anupam, SP, Gopalganj.

An embarrassed state government has ordered a probe.

"We will file a chargesheet in a week and try for a speedy trial," said Home Secretary Aaamir Subhani.

But family members of the doctor as well as the doctor fraternity are demanding a CBI probe.

"Rs 2 crore of compensation should be given. Full pension should be given to the family. A high level investigation should be ordered," said IMA President Sahajanand P Singh.

The incident has only added to the perception of the bad lands of Bihar just when the state seemed to be shrugging it off.
