India's most fuel efficient cars

Average car buyers in India have traditionally considered fuel efficiency as a major factor when it comes to buying a car. Increasing fuel costs will further strengthen the cause of this factor.

The automotive industry has responded to this demand and most companies in the country are now focusing on increasing fuel efficiency. Measures adopted to achieve this include refining the powertrain, weight reduction and inclusion of new technologies such as the start stop system. A combination of these measures not only increases fuel efficiency but also helps reduce emissions.

The importance of fuel efficiency is only set to rise significantly and we have rounded up the most efficient petrol & diesel cars your money can buy today. All fuel efficiency figures have been sourced from SIAM.

Tata Nano

Nano is already a superstar of the global automotive industry for its lowest price tag. The little car is powered by a 600 cc engine and coupled up with a lightweight body it manages to deliver the country's best figure of 23.7 kmpl. A new deluxe version is on the cards and is expected to have a music system over the existing features.

A diesel version of the Nano is also on the cards and can be expected to trump this figure given the car's dynamics.

Prices range between Rs 1.3-1.81 lakhs for three variants.

Hyundai i10

Hyundai has focused on fuel efficiency since the inception of its operations in India as it was the best strategy to compete with the dominant Maruti Suzuki.

All small cars from the Hyundai stable have delivered good fuel efficiency historically and the new i10 has raised the bar significantly. With tweaked engines the new generation of i10 now delivers an improved 20.3 kmpl, the best figure in its segment.

Prices range between Rs 3.48-5.91 lakhs for 9 variants.
