Varanasi blast: 3 detained in connection with blast

Varanasi: The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) on Wednesday detained three people in connection with Tuesday's blast outside a temple at the Shitla Ghat in Varanasi in which one child was killed and 32 persons injured.

The ATS has identified Shahnawaz and Assadullah as key suspects behind the blast. Both are allegedly linked to the 2008 Delhi blasts and the Batla House encounter in Delhi.

Shahnawaz is a resident of Azamgarh and was in the Middle East recently.

However, Varanasi IG Rajiv Pratap Singh told CNN-IBN that it was premature to comment of those detained.

"We are moving on right track of investigation. We didn't have any specific intelligence input with us. It is premature to comment on it. The situation in Varanasi is normal. The schools and shops are open," said Singh.

Earlier two people were questioned over the Indian Mujahideen e-mail sent to various media houses taking responsibility for the blast in Mumbai.

A two-year-old girl Swatsika Sharma was killed and at least 32 others injured in a terror strike reportedly carried out by Indian Mujahideen outside a temple at Shitla Ghat in Varanasi on Tuesday evening.

Indian Mujahideen, in an e-mail sent to some media houses, claimed responsibility for the blast that took place at around 6:35 PM just five minutes after the Ganga Aarti.
