Planning a wedding or other party needs a huge amount of work. There are so many different details to look at. One of the most important one is planning the reception. There are many things to think about but probably the most important is the musical entertainment.
There are different ways to entertain guests but the two most common for party organisers is a typical DJ or a live wedding band. Live music can really help make your event that bit more special, but what things should you look out for before hiring a live band?
The first step to choosing a wedding party band that the guests will really enjoy so why not ask some of your guests what type of music they want? Many event coordinators forget that it is the interests and likes of the guests that matter and not just their own taste in music.
The next thing that you should do when you are looking for a live band is catch them performing live because most of them perform in public as well as at private events. Seeing them perform live is the number one thing you should do but if this is not possible there are alternatives. Ask them if you can have their pre-recorded CD's to check their performance or preferably a video. This will give you an idea of whether this band is exactly what you want for your wedding reception.
It is important to know just how good and professional the band are. Find out how long they have they been together. How long have the individual members been playing for? You should be able to find individual and group biographies in their written information or website. This will give you a good overall view of the band.
To find a suitable wedding band start by looking online. Just google 'wedding band' or 'hire a live band' and you will find a lot of different websites. These will usually contain photos, videos and audios of the band. All of these will help you see how professional the band is.
Additionally, the websites can also provide you with testimonials from their previous clients; go through them to find our what other people think of the band. The website will also have the list of the band repertoire which is very important to have a look into it.
Try and find a band whose music is versatile and is likely to appeal to a lot of different people. For instance progressive jazz or heavy rock will only appeal to a small majority whereas 70's soul or disco music appeals to people of all ages.
Negotiate a fair price with the band manager. Once you have agreed on it, it should be written down on a contract. You will then need to pay a deposit to secure the date of your event.
About a week prior to your wedding party you will want to call them confirm the final details of your event. Make sure you check with them about what they are wearing and also check the setlist if you want to. Make sure they know what time to arrive to set up their equipment.
Remember that the band is likely to have travelled a long way to play, so be sure to provide them with refreshments either before or during their performance. Make sure they have a written timetable so they know when they are expected to play.
