Mumbai: A total of 860 persons were arrested for drunken driving on the New Year eve by the traffic police, officials said on Sunday. The maximum arrests were made in the eastern suburbs (313), followed by central Mumbai (162), Western Mumbai (146), northern suburbs (136) and south Mumbai (over 100), they said.
"Despite repeated warnings and campaigns highlighting consequences of drunken driving, a large number of person were arrested for driving under heavy influence of alcohol," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S Solunkhe told PTI.
Several persons were released after they paid bail amount of Rs. 2,000, he said.
