Prime minister accepts responsibility over CVC issue

A day after the Apex Court struck down the controversial appointment of PJ Thomas as the Central Vigilance Commissioner, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that he owes responsibility on the issue.

"Obviously, I think the Supreme Court has pronounced and as a loyal citizen of the country, I accept it and also respect the judgement and I accept my responsibility" Dr Singh told reporters at the technical airport before his departure to the national capital.

The Prime Minister was on a day-long official visit to this winter capital to declare open the 'Jagti Township' for Kashmir Hindu families who had to leave the Valley in view of terrorist threats and also to address the Third Convocation of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology (SKAUST).

"I respect the judgement of the Supreme Court and I accept my responsibility," the Prime Minister said and ensured that such things do not happen again.

Mr Thomas' appointment was declared illegal by the Supreme Court on yesterday. The Prime Minister was part of a three-member panel which selected him to the post.

His comments assumed importance after the BJP left it to the conscience of Dr Singh, after the apex court quashed the appointment stating that it would prefer to await the response of the Prime Minister.

To another question on what would be his further line of action, he said, "first I should speak in Parliament. I have not made up my mind. But the issue you have raised is an important issue. It is necessary to ensure that such things do not happen again."
