Professor stabs student after rejecting his Love proposal

Angry at being rejected by a 22-year-old final year student of his department, a professor of a private engineering college in Tiruvallur assaulted her with a knife on Thursday.

According to the police, S Preethi was returning from a company in Ramavaram where she and her friends were doing a project when Arunkumar attacked her. She suffered severe injuries to the neck, head and left finger. Arunkumar managed to flee even as her friends cried out for help.

Preethi was rushed to MIOT Hospital, where doctors stitched up her wounds. She is recovering well, doctors said.

The Valasaravakkam police have registered a case.

The police found out that Arunkumar of Madhavaram was heading the department of electrical and electronics engineering at the college in Thirupachur, where Preethi is a student.

They said Arunkumar had been with the college for many years. He was married, but allegedly had some problems in his marital life.

Arunkumar proposed to Preethi, who rejected him. He continued badgering her and when the harassment exceeded limits, Preethi lodged a complaint with the Tiruvallur police a few weeks ago.

Arunkumar was summoned and told to stay away from her. This, police said, may have prompted him to decide to take revenge on her.

He monitored her movements and came to know of her project at an electrical company on Appasamy Road in Ramavaram, near Chennai. On Thursday, he waited till she came out of the company and attacked her.
