A senior journalist employed with an Assamese daily in the Baba Kharak Singh Marg area has been arrested by the New Delhi district police for allegedly beating up her maid who is only 12 years old. The accused has been identified as Reema Sharma (40). The Mandir Marg area police have registered a case under the JJ Act sections 23 and 26 besides slapping IPC section 323 against her. "The journalist was later provided bail as all offences were bailable,'' said an senior investigating officer. According to sources, the accused had brought the girl from Assam to her Baba Kharak Singh Marg rented residence about two months back. "The victim's father works as a peon. Sharma's husband, who is posted at the Kaziranga National Sanctuary, was his immediate boss. When the peon was asked to send his daughter to Delhi, he readily agreed," said a cop from the Mandir Marg police station.
"The girl was paid only Rs 300 as wage. The woman would beat up the child for slight mistakes. On Friday, the girl ate some malai without informing her. When the journalist found this out she flew into a rage and beat up the girl. The child received severe injuries near her eyes, lips, legs and other parts of the body. Doctors at the RML hospital said the girl had a narrow escape as she could have lost her eyesight. The neighbours had heard her howling in pain after which they made a PCR call. We rescued the girl and admitted her to the RML Hospital. We have got her Assam address and have contacted her relatives. We are expecting them to arrive in the capital by Sunday evening," said the cop.
Sources in the New Delhi district said the accused has been covering the PMO for a northeastern daily newspaper. Her husband is posted in Assam. Her son, who is a student of class V at a leading public school on Bhai Veer Singh Marg, stays with her. Sources claimed that the accused said "she suddenly lost her mind in the heat of the moment and is repentant for her act".
