Adarsh Scam: Governor Suspends Ramanand Tiwari

Maharashtra's State Information Commissioner Ramanand Tiwari, who was from a long time being accused for his alleged connection in the Adarsh scam, has been suspended by the state Governor K Sankaranarayanan.

The Governor issued the order on Thursday with immediate effect 'to protect the sanctity of the office of information commissioner and to protect public trust in the institution'.

"The suspension order has been issued and is with immediate effect," a source quoted.

Former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of 1972 batch Tiwari was additional chief secretary in-charge in the urban development department. Tiwari was pulled into the Adarsh scam when it was revealed that his son Omkar was allotted a flat in the society.

In December, Tiwari was asked to resign from his post over his alleged involvement in the scam.

A source quoted the order as saying, "after considering the seriousness and gravity of charges against Tiwari (the governor), is of the view that to protect the sanctity of the high office of information commissioner as well as to protect public trust in the institution, it is desirable that Shri Tiwari not be allowed to function as state information commissioner while the inquiry is pending."

The Governor's move comes two days after he referred the matter to the Supreme Court under the Right To Information Act- showing the guidelines for possible actions that can be taken against the state chief information commissioner or state information commissioner.
