Govt intervention need of hour in tourism sector says Thomas cook director

Thomas Cook Executive Director Rakshit Desai has stressed the need for government intervention in reforming the commercial tax structure to promote ancillary tourism industry.

Talking after releasing a white paper on 'Corporate Travel Trends Outlook and Opportunities 2011' last night Mr Desai said aviation industry will boom if the tax structure will be reviewd.

There would be more travel by air and the government would get more benefits through other means of taxes, he added.

He admitted that privatisation of airport is the beginning of the same process but stressed it should also look on the reviewing of tax strcuture.

He said the travel industry is on the verge of fundamental transformation. The period of global financial crisis has tested each industry to its ultimate resilience level requiring strategizing at the corporate level to be innovative.

He said Thomas Cook embarked on a research to enable through clarity amongst stake holders and offer a much wanted fresh approach whilst planning ahead into the year.
