Young, educated and affluent - that's the face of the latest credit card fraud in Delhi. A Post Graduate from a London University and an MBA Mukul Garg and his fiance, Alisha Sharma, who is pursuing an MBA have been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly cloning old credit cards and using them to go on a shopping spree. They were allegedly working with a Nigerian group that is absconding. South Delhi DCP HGS Dhaliwal said, "Interrogations have shown that they have been cheating many people for quite some time."
On the February 23, an employee in a private bank in the capital received a complaint from a customer saying that someone had used his credit card, which he had stopped using some time ago. The couple was arrested following this tip off. Mukul and Alisha had at least seven bank accounts which they had opened using fake identities.
"They have been involved in almost 30-40 such cases," said Dhaliwal.
According to recent data available with the Delhi Police, there has been a sharp increase in the number of crimes being committed by educated first time criminals. While 90 per cent of the crimes committed last year were by first time criminals, as many as 127 graduated and educated people were involved in all sorts of crimes. This recent incident adds a reason for worry for the Delhi police - already fighting crime in the country's crime capital.
